You are making it sound like Survival Instincts is primarily because people are dumb. It’s just a shame they never thought to think more outside the box. Or even have certain hidden shortcuts or alternative level exits where if you find them, you can skip past a level or two within that zone, or it unlocks an additional level that you normally would never have gotten if you just went to the normal endpoint.Īll of these mechanics are things that already had precedent back in 1996. Maybe instead of generic secrets like ammo and health or identical statues, they could’ve made the secrets be relics or texts/scrolls that provide Lara with information that she would’ve gotten in the next level or so, allowing her to jump past to the next country/zone. If they wanted to create a truly nonlinear experience while still dividing their world into levels, they could’ve taken a page out of the Mario games, which did “nonlinear level-based gameplay” much better, with the warp function and alternate paths. That’s another thing they could’ve done better. Some things can be done in different orders-and that's the kind of "nonlinearity" the reboot games use. The Last Revelation (And later, The Angel of Darkness) introduced the hub system that the Survivor Trilogy would later use, but it's still not that much more open. There's no one point where you can, say, choose to steal a guard's gun, or use stealth to take out more than one guard yourself (Though I remember you can use a trap to kill one guard, which is great), or take an entirely different path through the ventilation system and avoid guards altogether. Progress continues in this repeating factor-evade traps, free prisoners, get key cards, continue, and eventually find your pistols. Evade gunfire, find your first key card, and you head to the next area. You start with nothing, and in order to survive, need to free the prisoners to kill guards for you. Take Tomb Raider III's High Security Compound level. The games may, at first, seem to have an "open" feeling, but you do only have one fixed way to go through an area. I've played the first six games and their expansion packs several times over the years, with Chronicles being my least played (I've played it maybe twice). No offense, but you clearly never played the ps1-era games or if you did, not for very long. The chopper is also a scripted instant death in the reboot while in AOD/Chronicles it actually does damage over time. I don't see how points of no return make it more linear and most levels don't have them, more so since most of ther reboot is literally corridors so they can show off their boring linear scripted sequence.įor comparison, Helicopter Chase in Rise, you basically just hold forwards down a linear path, Helicopter Chase in AOD, there are two routes to this level and there are a few health items you can find while the chopper is after you. and there's less combat but more exploration and trying to find out where to go next. They also don't frequently interrupt your gameplay like the reboot. In the Core Design games after 3 levels would sometimes have multiple routes through them. (since they weren't found when the plot demands it.) Secrets rewarded you with ammo and health in all of the Core-era games except chronicles and after Tomb raider 2 these got important as you would find important health (since that didn't regenerate) and ammo since they got somewhat scarce or even find a weapon several levels early. Unlike the reboot you could actually get lost in later levels and you didn't have Survival instinct as a fancy thing to tell you what to do because the game designers think you're too dumb to play a linear third person shooter. Only two of the games, Legend and Chronicles can really be called linear, the ps1-era Core Design games would have later levels be massive mazes.
